01 The brief
A café website has one job on a phone and a different job on a desktop. On a phone it is answering "are you open, where are you, do you do oat milk" from someone two streets away. On a desktop it is deciding whether this is the place to meet on Saturday.
Most independent café sites fail the first job entirely — opening hours buried in a footer image, and an address that will not open in a maps app.
02 The approach
Warm paper, not white
An off-white ground at #f8f2e7 rather than pure white, so the page feels like the room and the light. Small decision, and the difference between a café and a clinic.
A high-contrast serif pairing
Cormorant Garamond for headings brings elegance without preciousness, and Manrope keeps the practical information — hours, address, menu — completely plain.
Answer the doorstep question first
Hours, location and the menu sit where a phone user finds them immediately. The story and the gallery come after, for the visitor who has already decided and is now just enjoying the place.
An inbox behind the counter
Cake orders and private-hire requests come through an enquiry form and land in the café’s own admin — a locked inbox with statuses, notes and one-tap replies. On this demo the sign-in page hands you the password, so walk in and have a look.
Every build on this page uses a different type stack and a different ground colour, chosen for that business. That is what “never templated” means in practice — it is checkable, not a claim.
