Ámbit

A practice whose work is about proportion and light — so the site had to be built the same way.

01 The brief

An architecture practice is judged on its portfolio and on its restraint. The website is, unavoidably, a work sample: a badly set architecture site says more about the practice than any project on it.

The brief was a site that could hold large photography without decoration, and that a prospective client could scan in ninety seconds to decide whether the sensibility matched theirs.

02 The approach

01

Stone ground, generous margin

A pale stone ground, #e7e6e1, and a grid with real margin. The white space is the design decision — it is what lets the buildings read as objects rather than thumbnails.

02

A grotesk with proportion

Space Grotesk for headings gives the page a drafting-table precision without tipping into novelty. Inter carries the body; IBM Plex Mono handles project metadata, where alignment matters.

03

Work first, studio second, contact last

The structure mirrors how the enquiry actually happens — someone sees a project they recognise their own brief in, then checks who made it, then gets in touch.

The specimen

Every build on this page uses a different type stack and a different ground colour, chosen for that business. That is what “never templated” means in practice — it is checkable, not a claim.

03 The result

  • A portfolio that gets out of the way of the photography, which is the entire job.
  • Large architectural imagery served responsively, so a phone never downloads a desktop-sized file.
  • A layout built on a consistent grid and spacing scale rather than per-section improvisation.

Ámbit is a concept build — our own work, not a client project. We invented the business and built the site properly, to the exact standard a paying client would get. We build sites like this for real businesses — see what we do for local businesses in Newcastle.
